Growing up in Antigua I took the beaches for granted. Now that I have been to a considerable amount of beaches around the world, including the United Kingdom and the United States, I know that Antiguans have the best beaches to enjoy. The coasts of Antigua are ideal for yacht cruising and racing, with constant trade winds and many harbors for exploration. Easily a week could be spent cruising around this picturesque island of the Caribbean. The sister island of Barbuda has shell laden beaches so long that they dip below the horizon.
It is true, Antiguans are known for their party habits. The type of party that would make Madonna, Lindsay Lohan or Paris Hilton say, “Timeout” while trying to catch their breaths. The main event tourists from around the world and Antiguans themselves look forward to attending is Carnival. It is a ten-day festival of colorful costumes, beauty pageants, talent shows and especially good music. The festivities, which celebrate emancipation, are exciting and extensive, ranging from the Party Monarch and Calypso Monarch competitions of Calypsonians, the Panorama steel band competition and the spectacular Parade of Bands to the Miss Antigua Pageant and the Caribbean Queen’s Competition. In addition to these major events, the nonstop revelry of this eleven-day carnival includes innumerable smaller festivities, including local concerts, food fairs, parades and cultural shows.
Antigua is also a place for lovers. More and more people are getting married while on vacation, and it’s now easy to do in Antigua and Barbuda. Even cruise ship visitors can get married. There are three simple steps: Visit the Ministry of Justice located on lower Nevis Street in downtown St. John’s with your valid passports, complete the application and pay any applicable fees.
Confirm a date and time for the ceremony with a Marriage Officer and get married. Congratulations!!…
